Exploring and advancing various felt making techniques as we go throughout the term. This term we are exploring texture through felt making with resists. We will work towards selecting a texture you like and creating a generous sized handbag in the final few weeks. Wk 1: Create a flower 'scene' with a 3D relief flower head. Wk 2 & 3: Exploring textures through 6 samples - consider your colour pallet. Wk 4: Making a 3D vessel using a selected texture from previous weeks. Wk 5: Breathe week (finish off/take stock/test out/try something) We will also look at bag planning for next week. Wk 6: Bag making with a resist and chosen texture. Wk 7: Create a lining for your bag. Stitch in lining, clasp and handles* (Sewing machine required - you can bring in your own** or use one of the studio's.) Wk 8: Finish off bag construction - or - explore your own felt project. Wk 9: Needle felting - 3D creatures: A fox is afoot! *Handles are not part of the course fees - approx. £12 a set. ** Personal machines need to be in good working order - make sure there are no signs of damage to power leads etc.

A 3 hour session getting to grips with how the process of wet felting with wool fibres works. We will create a wet felted fabric that will open up a new world of stitch potential, while learning about the science of felt making.

Wet felted 3D Vessel: A two day introduction to 3D wet felting, incorporating nuno felting and your own mark making into a 3D wet felted vessel. Day 1: Wet felting introduction and painting* your own fabric ready for day 2's vessel making. *Simple mark making on fabric - please feel free to bring in your own painterly/line inspiration based on anything from flowers to abstract art. Day 2: Fixing fabric, laying out and felting your vessel. You will go home with your own unique vase style vessel. FAQ: Is the session suitable for newbies to felt making? Yes, absolutely; though please be aware that felt making requires a bit of focus and elbow grease! What is included in the price? Refreshments - tea and coffee in the studio. A short lunch is planned in - Please feel free to bring your own light lunch (Week days only: if you arrive earlier and pre order from the café – they will deliver to the Textile studio at 12pm if you ask them to.) Eileen Bass is a Warrington based glass fuse artist. Eileen will be running a half day introduction class, in The Textile Studio. In a small class of just 6 you will learn the basics of glass cutting and fusing. Over the 3 hours you will design and make 2 coasters and a small hanging light catcher. Time: 9am to 12noon Refreshments: Tea and coffee in the studio and there is an artsy on-site Café R'Teapot open 10 til 2pm for a lunch stop to (feel free to reserve a lunch). Over these 9 week blocks we explore various processes including lino, gelli and silkscreen printing, free machine stitch, fabric collage and manipulation, dyes, image transfers, chemical treatments and sometimes a touch of felt making. Focus this term: This term we will explore small scale lino/stamp cutting on textiles, adding these small prints into raw patchwork panels and over stitching with free machine stitch designs. We'll also link this to free motion and dissolvable bowl making. 'Sprint time theme?' Project 1 - Raw edge mini quilt with hand printed textiles and free stitched overlay design. Wk 1: Design, cut and test print your own mini motif lino/stamp. (Collect fabrics in your chosen colour pallet) Wk 2: Print your lino/stamp on various fabrics, possibly incorporating repeat patterns. Wk 3: Compile and collate patchwork background panel. Consider your free stitch design at this juncture. Wk 4: Stitch fabrics together. Wk 5: Free machine stitch design onto your background panel. Wk 6: Breathe week: take stock/finish off any outstanding work. Or: cut and print a funky image for printing a collection of textile cards, eg a cup cake... Project 2 - Dissolvable Stitched Bowls Wk 7: Small test bowl - fabrics and threads Wk 8/9: Plan and design - use small unused motif prints (print if you need to) to add to your final larger free stitched bowl. FAQ: Do I need my own sewing machine? Nope - Most folks prefer to use and learn with their own but either is fine. As long as I know you will need one of the studio's, its fine; just let me know from the outset. Personal machines need to be in good working order - make sure there are no signs of damage to power leads etc. Can I still do this block if I don't know free machine stitch/embroidery/thread drawing? Yes - This technique is used in most of the Creative Textile blocks. While it is possible to get a hold of the process within the course block, I have discovered that for complete newbies to free machine stitch, it is more beneficial to provide a session solely on those processes, designed as a smaller cosy beginners day. Please book one of these sessions before the main block if it is a process that's new to you: 'Intro to Free machine Stitch' - Day Workshop. Note: If you are bringing your own machine, it needs to be in good order. You will need a free machine foot etc (more details can be found on the booking link for 'Intro to Free Machine Stitch')

Join Linda on 'Turning Japanese' A no stress feel good workshop! It’s all about connecting the process of hand stitching and repair, with healing ourselves. We may not be exactly the same after illness or trauma, but we can become whole, beautiful, valued and loved. Taking inspiration from the Japanese techniques of kintsugi and boro work. (See the About page for more information) What processes and crafts will the sessions cover? Think surfaces - printing, felt making, stitch, even some ceramics. The only thing Maria doesn't teach is knitting and crochet. We believe that 'making' and creative engagement can help with your well-being and sense of self. At only £3, the sessions are affordable to all due to the financial support provided to Creative Ties CIC from the Cheshire Community Foundation. Lets get you to grips with free machine stitch, also known as free machine embroidery and thread drawing. (They all the same technique) This will be a great introduction on how to open a door to creativity with your machine. We'll also try our hand at a little free machine applique. For this session: You need to be reasonably well acquainted with your sewing machine and know that it is in good order (forms a good stitch). You will need to have a free machine stitch/darning foot (and plate if the model has no feed dog drop).
